My Top 5 Coasters

My Top 5 Coasters

I thought as I’m just starting this blog and it’s the start of a new season I’d list the my favourite rides and reasons why. I’m a bit aware that this is a pretty basic list amongst european enthusiasts, but I plan on getting in more creds this year

5. SHAMBHALA - PORT AVENTURA

I love me a good B&M, and this is one of the best. Just a euphoric floaty air-time stunner with a great theme, beautiful colour, great view, ahh it’s just all kinds of fab. I don’t have much more to say about this ride, it’s just a great layout design!

4. NEMESIS - ALTON TOWERS

Nemesis’ first inversion

Nemesis’ first inversion

A ride so so so close to my heart, the crowning jewel in my second home Alton Towers. I always wonder if maybe other rides I’ve ridden are better, but one ride on the back and I’m reminded how great this coaster is. That wingover-helix-zero-g triple punch is perfection. Then the mid course v-loop where it hits full speed has so much impact.

Having worked in “The Valley” I had the opportunity to walk around Nemesis and appreciate how big a deal this ride was when it was built and all the little nuances the track design has. It was literally ground breaking, and I have to be thankful for it, as I doubt the industry would have been the same without it.

3. WILDFIRE - KOLMARDEN

Wildfire’s first drop

Wildfire’s first drop

Sat at the back of a Swedish zoo (Kolmarden), this RMC just should not exist. Even once your in the zoo it doesn’t fit in, shoved at the back of the park next to a kiddie credit. But that seems to give it so much charm, it sits there with a quiet confidence. No blaring music, no massive adverts telling you about how amazing it is, it’s just like it’s not a big deal… BUT IT IS! It’s our only RMC here in Europe, and not only that, we didn't get a watered down version like I’m so used to seeing in the UK.

The ride experience is a perfect blend of air-time, inversions and speed thats smooth and re-ridable. But also coupled with the most breathtaking view on any coaster out there. Definitely my top woodie (this counts as a woodie right).

2. TARON - PHANTASIALAND

Taron’s Overbank

This one was tough, me and Kris have gone back and forth about this. Nothing could’ve prepared me for this beast of a coaster. I was aware of how amazing Phantasialand was, but I’ll never forget seeing this coaster in the flesh for the first time. It’s the most stunning coaster in the world, I dare you to try and find one that manages to be this good looking and still deliver and powerful ride experience, it’s usually one or the other. I’m obsessed with the soundtrack too, I keep trying to get my GP friends to watch videos and listen to the soundtrack, because that atmosphere is really unmatched and everyone should experience it.

As for the coaster, it’s got a lot going for it. Those restraints are a dream, that second launch! Those two crazy moments of air-time, as I could spend weeks in Klugheim and never get bored. The only reason I decided that it didn’t come first on my list is that from a track design point, there’s a few small lulls that could do with more speed (and wtf are those trims about).

1.HELIX - LISEBERG

Helix’s zero-g and top hat

If you’ve read my Liseberg report you’ll know I rate this a 10/10 ride. It’s just perfection in layout design. As I design a lot of layouts on NoLimits, it’s just one of those coasters I wish I’d designed. It turns right and left at the right time, every force is thought out, the positive Gs hit hard and the air-time is in just the right place.

It’s also done with so much consideration for it’s surroundings. Swerving around the other rides and keeping it’s speed by cascading down the mountain till eventually as it’s about to loose speed it launches you all the way back up. Then add an original abstract theme executed well and Mack’s brilliant trains and restraints, I just can’t see it being beaten on my list soon.

Just want to address too the problem of the weak launches. It’s better than a lift hill am I right?!
